Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed Guzaazrish is due in theatres on November 19.

Unlike Bhansali's earlier films, Guzaarish has been shot on locales, not sets.

Filming started in Goa in July 2009 and wrapped up in April 2010.

In addition to directing the film, Bhansali is scoring its music, which will be released in September end.

"I've always been a musician at heart. I learnt how to convey human emotions on screen by listening to Lataji's (Mangeshkar) voice. I feel I'd be more complete as a filmmaker by personally interpreting the musical emotions of my characters," says Bhansali.

Set in old Goa, the film's sets reflect Portuguese architecture and style.

Aishwarya essays a deglam role in the film. Hrithik, who plays a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair, had to stop going to the gym to loose abs and gain weight around his waist. He sports long hair and a beard.
The film is still running in multiplexes but Colors channel, which had obtained the TV rights of the movie, will be screening 'Kites' on June 27.

The channel had previously shown high-profile films like 'Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani' and 'Blue' within months of their release.

"We endeavor on bringing the biggest Bollywood blockbusters to our viewers, right in the comfort of their homes. The next six to eight months are going to be a pure treat for the viewers as we plan to showcase a series of big and recent Blockbuster films," said Gaurav Gandhi, Chief Commercial Officer & Head - International Business, Viacom18.

Produced by Rakesh Roshan and distributed by Reliance BIG Pictures, it was among the most awaited films of the year, and released worldwide May 21. But, despite a grand opening, the film failed to rise up to the expectations of critics and viewers.

According to the latest buzz, Hrithik is gearing up to do a lot many sequels in the near future, and Yash Raj Films’ ‘Dhoom’ is surely one of them. And apart from ‘Dhoom 3’, Hrithik is reportedly all set to be a part of the sequel of ‘Krrish’, and sources reveal that daddy Rakesh Roshan’s team of writers has already started working on the script of the much-awaited ‘Krrish’ sequel.

Confirming the news, Hrithik said, “I’ll be only too excited to do a ‘Dhoom 3’.”

“It is so easy to keep doing ‘Dhoom’, it is so easy to continue the saga of ‘Krrish’. I have done it and I can do it with my eyes closed. But my film journey will also have a few detours. If I don’t constantly and continuously challenge myself as an actor, where is the fun?” added a modest Hrithik.

The third outing of ‘Dhoom’ is also expected to be helmed by director Sanjay Gadhvi and is reportedly slated for a 2012 release.

He didn’t sound too happy with the reviews in India but he did agree to take a few questions inside Auditorium 2 at INOX (City Centre Salt Lake). He also answered a couple of questions only for t2.

Do you think you have failed your audience?

Because of my past success, people are coming to watch Kites with strings attached. I am an artiste. I have to explore. I have to do different things. Some people asked me whether I would go back to doing typical films. What they are actually saying is that Kites is not a typical film, which is a good sign. Some will resist change, some will accept change. We are all proud of the film.

Did too much hype kill Kites? Especially because you are coming after two years...

I don’t know why people are making me feel that I have been away for ages. It’s been two years but it’s not taken two years to make Kites. People are under the impression that I have been into Kites for the last two years. But no, I have made two films during this time period and I have also recovered from six months of very tortuous pain from my knee injury. I couldn’t walk and I couldn’t do a lot of things. That’s where my time has gone and in spite of that I have done Kites and Guzaarish (Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film opposite Aishwarya Rai). And that should come out very soon, in two-four months. So there won’t be that long a gap after Kites.

In hindsight should you have played safe and gone for a more massy film?

When I did Koi… Mil Gaya with my father, everyone said that it will go against your action image. How can you play a mentally challenged person when three of your films haven’t worked? But I did it at that time. Then they said that a superhero film with mask and cape will not work in India. That worked. I have always tried to push the boundaries and that is why we made Kites.

Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori at INOX (City Centre Salt Lake) on Monday. Pictures by Aranya Sen
Compared to other superstars you are elusive. Is that a conscious strategy?

I think every individual needs to be his own person and you have to find the person you are. I might be a bit more shy than the other stars. That’s all. I don’t feel the need to be in the news for no apparent reason, for no logical reason. Just to push the image of a superstar, which I don’t consider myself to be and I don’t identify with one.

What was it like working with Barbara Mori?

Working with Barbara was absolutely fabulous. She is such an honest actor, so true to herself and so dedicated and passionate. She gave us the right impetus and the right push so that we could attempt something as honest as Kites. The film wouldn’t have been possible without her.

Did you help her adjust to the Bollywood scheme of things?

I helped Barbara whichever way I could. We were playing hosts and we were all welcoming her to our country and showing her the way India can love. That is why I am a little sad about the way the press has written wrong stories about her. But again it’s about individuals and not everyone.

Why did you get mad at the media at Shirdi?

It was not the media. One shouldn’t generalise. It was about five people who went beyond any reasoning. I tried my best to reason with them. See, we shut our eyes when we pray. Why do we do that? Because we want to put a stop to the world and just connect with god. I wanted my wife and my mother to get that privacy. So I requested that please don’t enter the shrine… you have been following us for half an hour and that’s okay but please don’t enter the shrine. Give us 35 seconds and then we will come outside and I will talk to you. But they didn’t listen to me. What do you do?

You also turned playback singer with Kites? How did that go?

I am very scared to say this but I enjoyed singing a lot. Of course, I am not a professional singer and neither is my character. What Anurag had said to me made sense to me. He said it didn’t matter if you sang it well or you didn’t, it was about being honest to the moment. About keeping it real. Even if you sing badly, it would look sweet. The whole attempt of the film was to keep it real.

Released by Reliance Big Pictures, the Rakesh Roshan-produced film grossed an estimated USD 1 million for the period of May 21-23, ranking just behind the ninth-place film How to Train Your Dragon which has grossed over USD 210 million.

Directed by Anurag Basu, Kites has been praised by US film critics and has generated the most number of mainstream reviews ever for a Bollywood film on opening day.
It has earned an exceptionally high 85 percent score on RottenTomatoes.com, a popular film review aggregator website in US.

In India, Kites soared to the second biggest opening day gross in history trailing only 3 Idiots. In addition, the film has opened at number five at the UK box office.
This Friday, on May 28, an international version of the film titled Kites- The Remix will open in select theaters in US.

It is presented by Hollywood filmmaker Brett Ratner, focuses more on the action and runs 90 minutes in length.

Some theaters across North America will be playing both versions simultaneously giving fans a choice in their viewing experience.

The first triumph was a fluke, but the second triumph might herald the birth of a crossover Indian superstar. For the first time, an Indian movie broke the weekly top 10 grossing films in the U.S. The metric is widely tracked across the U.S., and “Kites” managed to crack the list. Now, that achievement should come with a huge asterisk.

With a gross of just over $1 million, “Kites” wouldn’t have cracked the top 10 list in any other week of this year. The film certainly benefited from a rare, exceptionally weak May week in the US. Though some analysts question how much leg the movie has, the worldwide take for opening weekend was almost $14 million, with the majority of that from India.

The second triumph though, maybe a longer lasting one. Hrithik Roshan wowed U.S. reviewers. The Los Angeles Times called him “a sensational dancer” with “the dashing, chiseled looks of a silent movie matinee idol.” The Toronto Star also found Mr. Roshan’s body “chiseled” with “sculpted features.” The New York Times used words rarely uttered in the Grey Lady noting Mr. Roshan had a “smoking body.” The Village Voice said, “Roshan is a master at low-keying his enormous charm and shrugging off his blinding handsomeness.” The San Francisco Chronicle called him and his co-star, Barbara Mori, “as beautiful human beings as can be.”

It would be tough to find another actor who has recently sent critics weak in the knees like this. The Times ends its review praising Roshan: “Mr. Roshan requires viewing uncut: writhing on the dance floor or just gazing into space, the man was made to drive women crazy, one movie at a time.”

Mr. Roshan may or may not be a gifted thespian, but he possesses all the ingredients of a movie star heartthrob — drop dead gorgeous looks, smoldering eyes and a natural charm. With dozens of Hindi movies under his belt, thanks in part to his producer father, Mr. Roshan is at ease with the camera. “Kites” may not end up being the first Bollywood crossover hit, but Mr. Roshan’s looks, it seems, might just help him do what no Bollywood actor has yet done — conquer Hollywood, one movie at a time.

The aggressive promos had already set the temperature soaring for the Rakesh Roshan film starring Hritik Roshan and Barbara Mori making it among most awaited releases of Summer 2010.

“We were very aggressive in our marketing strategy and released the film across 2500 screens in 30 countries. This is the widest release ever for a Bollywood movie. There were 10,000 shows on the opening day, which is also a record,” says Mr Sanjeev Lamba, CEO, Reliance BIG Pictures.

Kites was marketed aggressively worldwide in the run-up to the release and created a lot of excitement and curiosity. The film grossed over Rs 21cr on the opening day, the second highest opening in India ever and is expected to have a bumper weekend.

The film has done well overseas too, and opened to full houses. The international version of Kites - Kites Remix - is being presented by Hollywood director Brett Ratner of X-Men and Rush Hour 3 fame. The film will open worldwide next Friday.

Read what worldwide critics have said about Kites:

"Overlong yet still plenty accessible, the sprawling 133-minute trilingual extravaganza will see its chances boosted by May 28 release of a shorter (and reportedly racier) English-language "remix" cut down to size by Brett Ratner, which Reliance Big Pictures intends to open on more than 2,300 screens internationally (1,800 of them in India)."

"The film is free of both subtlety and irony, and it demands of its charismatic stars, Hrithik Roshan and Bárbara Mori, that they act their hearts out with the utmost sincerity. The result is an exhilarating escapist entertainment that plays out like a violent and floridly poetic allegory."
-(Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times).

"Mr. Roshan requires viewing uncut: writhing on the dance floor or just gazing into space, the man was made to drive women crazy, one movie at a time."
-(Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times).

"If one is going to make a grand, action-packed love story set amid the garishness of Las Vegas and starring one of India's most charismatic actors, there's no point in being shy about it."
-(Lisa Tsering, The Hollywood Reporter).

"Even with the lights of the Vegas Strip forming a gauzy halo behind his tousled head, Roshan is a master at low-keying his enormous charm and shrugging off his blinding handsomeness."
-(David Chute, Village Voice).

"Preposterous? Oh, yeah. Preposterously entertaining? You bet."
-(Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer)

"It also helps that Kites' leading man, Roshan, is one of India's biggest superstars: a lithe, handsome man with a facial resemblance to Dr. McDreamy and the best washboard abs this side of Mark Wahlberg."
-(Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle).

"It slams seemingly disjunctive genres together with gleeful force, so that one minute we're watching spaghetti western, the next, a moody film noir detective mystery or a spectacular, strobe-edited rock music video."
-(Dann Gire, Daily Herald).

"Nonetheless, it's the sort of Bollywood/Hollywood hybrid that should find a big audience and make Hindi megastar Hrithik Roshan as big here as he is there. The actor, who will remind you of Bradley Cooper, inspires a fan frenzy known as Hrithikmania in India."
-(Liz Braun, Qmi Agency London Free Press).

"In the mood for an extravagant shoot-'em-up with a gorgeous couple, gangsters and cops complete with high-speed chases that end in blazing fireballs? Then go see Kites."
-(Stephen Schaefer Boston Herald).

"Kites pulls no punches in its histrionic story of love and revenge. It also spares no expense in the telling with the cast of primarily Hindi actors gnashing their way through a beautifully stylish production and several large-scale action set pieces."
-(Ted Fry The Seattle Times).

"I saw the long version, and it doesn't feel in any way stretched or dull. It tells a simple story - an almost archetypal story - but it does so with a lot of passion and technical sophistication."
-(Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle).

"Roshan is a genuine Bollywood star and it's not difficult to see why. With his yellow-green eyes, sculpted features and chiseled body, he exudes charisma and the camera loves him. Mori is likewise a smoldering onscreen presence and their burgeoning love and their growing desperation feels genuine as they are relentlessly pursued."
-(Bruce Demara, Toronto Star).

"It's to Roshan's credit in particular that the completely straight-faced, non-ironic movie pulls it off. It's hard to say who its audience is, other than die-hard Turner Classic Movies buffs, but for what it is—aside from occasional lapses like the cornpone music in one “Dukes of Hazzard”-like scene—Kites flies."
